Sheets of rain covered the windshield where wipers cut wedges that were awash with water as quickly as they were made.

The truck’s tires were forced deep into the wet clay by the weight of the load. As they rolled, the tires would grow to an immense size, adding a thick layer of clay with each turn. When the accumulation grew unwieldy it would slew off, causing the truck to slide sideways or spine in a partial circle.

Cosimo drove very carefully.
